CHAPTER 12

40 Hours Until the Rebellion Falls

Coleman felt his stomach churn as he looked over the edge of a small sandstone hill that allowed him to stare at the massive Catapults slowly moving below him.

If going through the underground temple, fighting more soldiers and having to evade the enemy long enough to get into position hadn’t been bad enough, Coleman was getting more and more irritated by the massive brutes guarding and pushing the Catapults.

Unlike normal guards these Brutes wore bright red armour with budging muscles almost popping out of their armour, their arms, legs and chests were muscle factories, and their entire purpose seemed simple enough to Coleman. These brutes were born, bred and created for the sole purpose of killing and pushing Catapults around. It was hard from a perfect life, but Coleman had little doubt these people weren’t intelligent enough to know what a good life was.

Especially as the only sound that came from these brutes were groans. Coleman doubted these people could just speak, bless them.

But just because they couldn’t speak didn’t mean they wouldn’t kill Coleman, the two Archers and three Rebels that were left. Coleman had to be smart here or risk everything and the fate of the Kingdom.

Whooshing, cheering and shouting filled the air as the catapults fired again and Coleman forced down a hiss of pain as he saw the flaming rocks smash into more of the wall.

Considering he had been gone for hours trying to get here, Coleman was impressed that Richard had managed to ensure the Wall held together as even from this distance Coleman could see the Wall was failing. Especially with five catapults attacking it every few minutes.

Taking out his sword, Coleman was about to think of a plan, then the five remaining troops he had knelt down next to him.

“We can’t fight ‘em,” someone said.

Coleman really wished Abbic was here. He needed someone he could trust by his side and Abbic was an amazing fighter so if things went south then at least there was a tiny chance they would make it back to the City.

“Bombo, got any knives on ya?” one of the Archers said to the other.

“Aye,” Bombo said.

Coleman’s eyes narrowed on the tall skinny man called Bombo with a massive ginger beard, grey hair and shaky hands. He was a bit surprised the Archer would fire straight.

“Coleman,” Bombo said, passing him the knives.

Coleman’s eyes widened as he realised what the Archers were hinting at. They clearly wanted him to throw the knives at the ropes that supported the Catapults. And the best thing was (at least to Coleman, not the enemy) that he didn’t need to cut them completely, all he needed to do was damage the ropes enough so the strain of firing the next rock would destroy the ropes.

It was risky. Coleman hadn’t practised throwing knives for years, decades even.

He held out the knives for someone else, but everyone smiled and shook their heads. Typical!

Coleman saw massive groups of brutes down below start to load up the catapults.
